I wonder what the inspiration is for "Austin Yellow" on the new M4?
The color most people probably associate with Austin is burnt orange, which I hate. It is the UT school colors.
Maybe it has something to do with Circuit of the Americas, but I don't see the connection.
It could be their logo, which has some yellow (and burnt orange)?
You don't think they named after Austin Healey do you?
Any ideas?

They didn't want to use Phoenix yellow again?

I don't know, but if they don't bring back techno violet with all of these cool new colors I'm gonna be pissed.

Austin 3:16 is about to whoop some Audi ass, and that's the bottom line, 'cause Stone Cold said so.

I think they just needed something to precede the word yellow and they chose Austin since it's the home of COTA and "COTA Yellow" doesn't roll of the tongue as easily. The new blue color is "Yas Marina Blue" after the track in Abu Dhabi and of course there was Laguna Seca Blue for the E46 and Interlagos Blue after the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace which used to be known as Interlagos. Then there's Silverstone after the track in the UK, etc. They just like using tracks and track locations.

I guess they are working their way east. Hyundai must have made them pass up Santa Fe.

They should've called it Amarillo!

Maybe that is the color you get when Steve scares the baby poop out of an Audi?

It's very likely named after Austin, Texas because of COTA. Many other BMW colours (especially blues and reds) are named after locales, especially ones with famous racetracks or otherwise famous for racing:
AVUS Blue, Estoril Blue, Dakar Yellow, Imola Red, Laguna Seca Blue, Indianapolis Red, Interlagos Blue, Le Mans Blue, Melbourne Blue, Monaco Blue, Monte Carlo Blue, Montreal Blue, Mugello Red, Silverstone Metallic, Singapore Grey, Valencia Orange.
As to why that shade of yellow? I have no idea. Many of the other ones aren't really relevant to the colour, either. Silverstone is obviously silver, valencia is a variety of the orange fruit, the Italian ones are red and the French ones are blue, but why is Dakar yellow, Indy red, or Laguna Seca blue? It's more likely that they just create a new shade first, and find a name later. Austin was a likely candidate.

They should have just swapped with Sakhir and made Sakhir Yellow and Austin Orange!

Duh! They even have a racetrack:

Although that is a little bit redundant :)

Okay, but it would have made a little more sense to swap with Sakhir, and make Sakhir Yellow and Austin Orange.
